Indochina wars, 20th-century conflicts in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, with the principal involvement of France (1946–54) and later the United States (beginning in the 1950s). The wars are often called the French Indochina War and the Vietnam War, or the First and Second Indochina wars.

The Vietnam War or American War in Vietnam, also known as the 1st & 2nd Indochina War or French Indochina War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1945 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975. It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union(USSR) & China, and other communist allies; South Vietnam was supported by the United States & France, and other anti-communist allies. The war, considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some, lasted almost 20 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973.

The conflict emerged from the First Indochina War between the French colonial government and a left-wing revolutionary movement (Ho Chi Minh), the Viet Minh. After the French military withdrawal from Indochina in 1954, the US assumed financial and military support for the South Vietnamese state. The Việt Cộng (VC).
