Brigadeiro is a popular Brazilian dessert often served in birthday parties. It’s a fudgy chocolate caramel made from sweetened condensed milk and cocoa powder. It’s origins cannot be confirmed but a well-known theory is that this dessert was created to promote the presidential candidacy of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes during the 1946 election. Despite the brigadier losing the election, this simple dessert now known as the brigadeiro, became a part of Brazil’s tradition.

► How to Make Fudge, Brazilian Style – Brigadeiro Recipe
2 tablespoon butter
1 can 395g condensed milk
4 tablespoon cocoa powder
Pinch of salt
Chocolate sprinkles (I used De Ruijter Chocolate Sprinkles)
Heat a non-stick pan to low. Add butter, condensed milk, cocoa powder and salt. Stir constantly to combine all ingredients and to prevent the mixture from burning. Cook for about 15 to 20 minutes until thickened. Once you can see the bottom of the pan when you draw a line in the mixture with your spoon, then the mixture is most likely ready.
Butter the surface of a large plate. Transfer the fudge mixture into the plate and spread around to help the mixture cool faster. You can refrigerate the fudge for about an hour to chill.
Once cooled, spread some butter into your hands and place a tablespoon of fudge into the palm of your hands. Roll the mixture into a ball. Roll this ball in sprinkles, ensuring that the whole surface is covered. Place brigadeiros in paper cups. Serve and enjoy!
Brigadeiros can be kept in the refrigerator and they should be good for 7 days.
